Schools OUT Launches 2025 LGBT+ History Month Theme: "Activism and Social Change" at Conway Hall
Tuesday, November 12, 2024
Schools OUT has officially unveiled the theme for the 2025 UK LGBT+ History Month at a special event held in London’s historic Conway Hall. As the organisation celebrates its 50th anniversary and two decades of UK LGBT+ History Month, this year's theme, “Activism and Social Change,” highlights the powerful impact of LGBT+ individuals who have shaped history through their unwavering commitment to equality.
The theme was announced at Conway Hall, a venue steeped in history and known for hosting significant social reform events, including the conference that laid the groundwork for the NHS and speeches by influential figures like George Orwell. The venue set the tone for a celebration focused on the enduring spirit of activism.
“Activism and Social Change” — A Call to Reflect and Celebrate
Founded to spotlight the contributions of LGBT+ communities, Schools OUT has dedicated the 2025 theme to recognising those who have driven social change. LGBT+ History Month was created as a platform to educate, celebrate, and inspire, shining a light on activists who have advanced justice and equality.
Spotlight on 2025 Historical Figures
Each year, the organisation highlights five historical figures who embody the chosen theme. The selected figures for 2025 are:
- Octavia Hill: Social reformer and co-founder of the National Trust.
- Ivor Cummings: Celebrated civil servant known as the "gay father of the Windrush generation."
- Annie Kenney: Fierce suffragette and advocate for women’s rights.
- Charlie Kiss: Renowned LGBT+ activist and campaigner.
- Olaudah Equiano: Abolitionist whose writings exposed the realities of the transatlantic slave trade.
Schools OUT will provide free resources focusing on these figures, available to schools, organisations, and businesses. Additionally, the organisation will highlight these individuals and other notable LGBT+ figures on its social media platforms throughout February.
A Creative Badge Design from the Next Generation
The 2025 UK LGBT+ History Month badge, designed by a 12-year-old student from St Anthony’s Girls’ Catholic Academy in Sunderland, encapsulates the spirit of activism. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of LGBT+ History Month, a limited number of badges from previous years will also be re-released.
