New YouGov Survey Reveals Shifting Public Attitudes Towards Transgender Rights in the UK

Sunday, March 23, 2025

A growing number of Britons are expressing scepticism over transgender rights, according to a major new YouGov survey published in February 2025. The report shows changing views across a range of demographics, including among young people and women—two groups that have historically been more supportive.

This is the fourth study in a long-term series by YouGov that tracks public opinion on gender identity in the UK since 2018. The findings reveal a more polarised debate on transgender inclusion, especially in areas such as healthcare, education, and access to public spaces.

While the majority of people still support the rights of transgender individuals, the latest data shows increased hesitation around certain policies. These include access to single-sex spaces, participation in sport, and self-identification.

The report shows that younger adults aged 18 to 24, once the most supportive demographic, are now expressing more cautious views. Women, too, have shown a decline in support when it comes to issues such as single-sex spaces and safeguarding.

Researchers suggest that this shift is being driven by greater media attention, political debate, and public discussion of the legal and practical implications of gender identity policies. Over the past two years, issues such as gender recognition reform in Scotland and discussions around trans inclusion in sport have been widely debated in the press and in parliament.

The public is not divided in a simple “for or against” split, the study notes. Rather, people hold a broad spectrum of views depending on the topic—whether it's gender markers on identity documents, access to youth healthcare, or rights in educational settings.

Campaigners have responded with a mix of concern and reflection. Some warn that this change in opinion could be used to restrict existing rights, while others argue it highlights the need for better communication, policy clarity, and deeper public engagement.

The report also highlights the role that employers, schools, and policymakers play in shaping inclusive and fair environments. As the national conversation continues to evolve, the survey underscores the importance of ensuring that workplace and public policies are evidence-based, compassionate, and transparent.
