Disconnect Between Employers and Jobseekers Hurting UK Recruitment

Monday, March 24, 2025

A new study has exposed a growing disconnect between what employers and jobseekers consider a “quality” role—a disparity that is contributing to the UK’s ongoing recruitment difficulties.

According to recent research conducted by HR software company Tribepad, 74% of employers report struggling to find candidates they consider high-quality, while 64% of jobseekers say they are unable to find job roles they would describe the same way.

The study suggests that this misalignment stems from fundamentally different priorities. Employers tend to focus on qualifications, immediate availability, and cultural fit, while candidates are placing greater value on flexible working, purpose-led roles, and inclusive workplace cultures.

“Employers and jobseekers often talk past each other when it comes to quality,” said Dean Sadler, CEO of Tribepad. “Jobseekers increasingly want roles that align with their values and wellbeing needs, and employers must adapt if they want to close skills gaps.”

This divergence in expectations has been building since the pandemic, which prompted many workers to reassess their career goals. As a result, jobseekers are now more selective, prioritising organisations that offer remote working, support for mental health, and transparent progression pathways.

Industries particularly affected by this mismatch include technology, healthcare, education, and logistics—sectors where vacancies remain high but unfilled. Experts warn that unless these expectations are reconciled, businesses will continue to face hiring challenges.

The research calls on employers to improve job design, update job descriptions to reflect modern expectations, and ensure inclusive recruitment practices. It also highlights the importance of clear communication between employers and candidates during the hiring process.

For jobseekers, the findings underscore the need to articulate their values and expectations clearly during applications. Career advisors are also encouraging workers to keep up with evolving job market demands and invest in upskilling.

As the UK labour market continues to evolve, bridging the gap between employer and jobseeker expectations could unlock access to untapped talent and improve hiring outcomes across the board. With demand still strong in many sectors, mutual understanding and flexibility will be essential for successful recruitment.

The report concludes that redefining job quality in a way that aligns both employer needs and employee expectations is essential for long-term economic health. Without it, recruitment will remain a challenge and key sectors will struggle to grow.
