The National Day for Staff Networks will be celebrated on Wednesday, 14th May 2025, under the theme #ReadyForChange. This day is dedicated to recognising the vital role that employee networks and resource groups (ERGs) play in creating more inclusive and supportive workplaces, including for LGBTQI+ employees. It highlights the numerous benefits these networks provide to individuals and organisations alike.
The aim of the day is to shine a spotlight on how staff networks foster inclusivity and belonging. 66% of workers agree that networks help create a more inclusive environment, and 70% of young adults aged 18-24 are more likely to apply to companies that offer networks. For LGBTQI+ employees, these networks can be a safe space to connect, share experiences, and advocate for policies that promote equality and support within the workplace.
The theme #ReadyForChange reflects the need for staff networks to adapt to an ever-evolving work environment. As workplaces undergo transformations, including the rise of AI and changes in workplace culture like remote work, it’s essential that networks remain flexible and responsive. Staff networks are at the forefront of addressing these changes, helping employees stay connected and supported during times of uncertainty and change.
Alison Dver, from ERG Alliance, explains the growing need for organisations to build sustainable networks: "As the workplace continues to change, employee groups remain a critical support system, providing connection and advocacy for those who may feel isolated or underrepresented."
Staff networks are also crucial in giving a voice to underrepresented and often marginalised communities, including LGBTQI+ employees. These networks not only create safe spaces for individuals but also help organisations respond to broader societal shifts. With geopolitical events spilling into the workplace, networks play an important role in providing a constructive platform for employees to express concerns and promote positive change.
As AI continues to rise and the focus on talent acquisition intensifies, organisations are adjusting their DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) strategies. For staff networks, this could mean increased pressure, but by staying #ReadyForChange, these groups can continue to provide support, lead advocacy, and drive workplace inclusivity.
The National Day for Staff Networks invites everyone—whether you're an EDI practitioner, an ally, or a network member—to celebrate the role of staff networks in creating better, more inclusive workplaces for LGBTQI+ employees and beyond. The day offers a chance to reinforce your commitment to making work a more welcoming space for all.
The National Staff Networks Conference will also take place on 14th May at the Congress Centre in London, bringing together professionals to discuss how networks can support diversity, inclusion, and change. The conference will feature influential speakers, including Sal Naseem, author of True North, Donna Fraser OBE, former Olympian, and Matt Jenkins, CEO of Dream and Leap. This event will provide a wealth of insights and networking opportunities.
